The cost of housing in Oregon is rising so rapidly that people find it challenging to live alone. We are seeing more shared homes and apartments than ever before. Due to the nature of laws and contracts, insurance company claims departments and the court system must find ways to compensate for losses associated with rented spaces shared by unrelated roommates.
The standard Renter Insurance Policy covers only you and relatives who live with you. Suppose your roommate is not a relative by blood or marriage. In that case, each of you will need your policy to cover your property and provide you with liability coverage for your actions. However, we have companies that will allow you to list one roommate as an Additional Insured on the same policy, eliminating the need for separate contracts. How you split the cost is up to you, but you must decide which of you will be the Primary Named Insured (responsible party).
